From a fireball in Cavan to NWA 869
My fascination with meteorites began in rural County Cavan, Ireland, back in the mid-1970s. Walking home from the village one night with family, a dazzling fireball streaked across the sky, igniting a lifelong interest in astronomy. Years later, in the mid-1990s, an advertisement for meteorites in an astronomy magazine caught my eye. It was from New England Meteoritical Services, and a few weeks later, I held my first meteorite. I was completely hooked, and that passion eventually led to the creation of NWA 869.
Precision and passion in every cut
At NWA 869, we pride ourselves on the meticulous care given to each meteorite. I use a Buehler Isomet sectioning saw, a scientific instrument designed for cutting thin slices. The meteorite is securely fastened before being carefully lowered onto the blade. Following the cut, each piece undergoes a rigorous polishing process, advancing through 12 grades of sandpaper and finishing with a one-micron, 30,000-grit polish. This dedication ensures that every meteorite we offer is a beautifully presented, unique specimen.
